Fluiten in het Donker is een tentoonstel¬ling waarin wat je vindt afhangt van wat je zoekt. Een ervaring met werk van Absalon, Pierre Bismuth, Tania Bruguera, Jasper Coppes, Leon Ferrari, Sara van der Heide, Jenny Holzer, Luciana Lamothe, Monika Sosnowska, en anderen, samengesteld door de Appel Curatorial Programme 2010/2011.

The 27th edition of Art Amsterdam presents 133 galleries from Europe, North- America and Asia. Art Amsterdam is the largest fair for modern and contemporary art in The Netherlands. The fair is a launching pad for young talent and a platform for established names from post-war art.

De eerste editie van Amsterdam Art/ Book Fair vindt plaats op 14 & 15 mei 2011 en presenteert een exclusieve en internationale selectie van kunstpublicaties. De Amsterdam Art/Book Fair wil reflecteren op de opkomende praktijken en nieuwe ontwikkelingen in de kunst, door een selectie van 70 uitgeverijen uit 16 landen te laten zien: Onafhankelijke uitgevers en kunstenaars, musea en instituten, kunstopleidingen en grafisch vormgevers. Ook lezingen door vooraanstaande sprekers, boekenlanceringen, gesprekken met kunstenaars maken deel uit van de AA/BF.

The first Amsterdam Art/Book Fair will take place the 14 & 15 of May 2011, presenting a high end international selection of art publications. The fair aims to reflect on the emerging practices and new development in art, through a selection of 70 publishers from 16 countries. Printed matter and digital media edited by independent publishers and artists, magazines and institutions, art schools and graphic design studios are featured in this first edition. Conferences and talks by keynote speakers, book launches, artist talks will take place during the AA/BF.

Art in Redlight presenteert AIR7: een groeiende digitale live stream installatie. Kunstliefhebbers, verzamelaars, galerie houders, kunstenaars en publiek in woord en beeld rechtstreeks vanaf Art Amsterdam, deelnemende locaties op de route en willekeurige plekken in de stad. Sense of Touch offers a powerful exprience by means of exciting use of material, bold visual interventions and a surprising and expressive approach of image, matter and subject. The exhibition shows the diversity in material and material use in the work of: Harmen Brethouwer, Barbara Broekman, Tom Claassen, Gijs Frieling, Arjan van Helmond, Marc Mulders, Maria Roosen, Gé-Karel van der Sterren, Berend Strik, Mary Waters.

Art Spot Amsterdam presenteert 15 professionele galerieën met diversiteit en kwaliteit hoog in het vaandel; van figuratief tot abstract, zowel in het platte vlak als driedimensionaal. Tevens zal er speciale aandacht geschonken worden aan videoanimatie van twee zeer jonge en veel belovende kunstenaars.

Artspot Amsterdam presents 15 professional galleries devoted to quality and diversity. Figurative as well as abstract works are on show and for sale, three-dimensional as well as paintings and works on paper.
A video animation by two young and very promising artists will receive special attention.

Psychopomp Counsel is een expositie georganiseerd door postacademisch kunstinstituut De Ateliers. Met werk van tien jonge kunstenaars die hun werkperiode aan De Ateliers afsluiten: Alex Dordoy, Cristóbal León, Patrizio di Massimo, Heiko Räpple, Stephen Rhodes, Stefan Ruitenbeek, Marion Verboom, Jasmijn Visser, Sarah De Vos, Coen Vunderink.

Psychopomp Counsel is an exhibition organized by the post academic art institute De Ateliers. Vlak buiten de ring in Amsterdam Nieuw-West ligt een klein paradijsje van creatieve ondernemers en kunstenaars; Beehive. Hier is het in bloei brengen van de wijk tot een kunst verheven. Tijdens de Beehive Open Atelier Route kun je dit in levende lijve meemaken. Dan openen alle Beehivers vanaf 11.00 uur de deuren van hun ateliers en kun je niet alleen hun werk bewonderen, maar ook zien hoe zij d.m.v. workshops de wijk, het publiek en kunst met elkaar verbinden. Op onze Villa Beehive zal er samen met het publiek een kunstwerk worden gemaakt en exposeren verschillende kunstenaars hun werk. \'s Avonds gaat het programma gewoon door in Club VLLA (www.VLLA.nl) met een BBQ en een clubavond. Geïnspireerd door de Bijbelse figuur Petrus presenteert fotograaf Michiel van Nieuwkerk de bijzondere foto-expositie ‘Poortwachters door Michiel van Nieuwkerk’. De foto-expositie in het Bijbels Museum toont de bezoeker eigentijdse poortwachters, die een denkbeeldige sleutel in handen hebben tot de toekomst van iemand anders.

Inspired by the Biblical character Saint Peter the photographer Michiel van Nieuwkerk presents the special photo exhibition ‘Gatekeepers by Michiel van Nieuwkerk’. The photo exhibition in the Biblical Museum displays contemporary gatekeepers, who hold the imaginary key to someone’s future.

Bougie is te gast in de Kunstkapel en toont werk van 10 aanstormende jonge kunstenaars van Nederlandse en Belgische akademies oa. Sarah De Vos, David Pedraza, Sander van Wettum en Tom Poelmans. Op 5 minuten loopafstand van de RAI: een overzichtelijk aanbod – schilderkunst – 3D – fotografie – videokunst op CASZ – lezingen – workshops voor kinderen.

CBK Amsterdam is een ontmoetingsplek voor hedendaagse kunst. Naast kunstuitleen, educatieve activiteiten en concerten zijn er wisselende exposities. CBK Amsterdam presenteert Urban Art EFX, een expositie met werk van dertien internationaal bekende beeldend kunstenaars. De expositie omvat schilderijen, beeldhouwwerk, fotografie en video-kunst. De kunstenaars, afkomstig uit Europa, India en Mexico, worden internationaal gezien als sleutelfiguren binnen Urban Art.

CBK Amsterdam is a meeting point for contemporary arts, comprising an art library, educational activities, concerts and an exhibition series. CBK Amsterdam presents Urban Art EFX, an exposition of thirteen internationally known expressive artists. The exposition encompasses paintings, sculpture, photography and video. The artists, from Europe, India and Mexico, are internationally recognized key figures within Urban Art.

Het Eddie the Eagle Museum opereert als een museum, een kunstenaars collectief en als reizende expositieplek. Geest-driftig en met het lef te durven falen, ligt de focus op het doen. Tijdens Art in Amsterdam zal er in het hoofdkwartier in de Tolhuistuin een dagelijks wisselende programmering zijn van kunst in al zijn uitersten.

Voor Set Amsterdam portretteerde Dana Lixenberg de stad Amsterdam in een serie stadsgezichten, landschappen en interieurs. In de foto’s legt zij de stad vast als een filmset, als een decor dat is getekend door de mensen die er hun leven doorbrengen en hebben doorgebracht. Kenmerkend voor de foto’s is de afwezigheid van mensen, hetgeen de concentratie vergroot op de ruimte en details.

In Set Amsterdam, Dana Lixenberg portrays the city in a series of landscapes and interiors. These photographs depict Amsterdam as a kind of film set, fashioned by its current and former residents. The absence of people in the images turns the viewer’s gaze to the space itself and to the myriad details which define these environments.

Wat is de waarde van kunst in tijden van crisis? Bestuurders met een verborgen leven in de kunst als verzamelaar of mecenas komen aan het woord over de zin en onzin van kunst in onze maatschappij. On a regular base, Frankendael Foundation presents contemporary art in the historic rooms of countryhouse Frankendael. The current exhibition presents a view through modern art towards the actual Credit Crisis. Apart from watching the arts, one can also enjoy the gardens or have lunch or dinner in the attached restaurant.

Galerie10 & Blue Episode organiseren, samen met zijn verbonden kunstenaars, de expositie RE:AMSTERDAM. Feestelijke opening zaterdag 14 mei met o.a. Dj Homey Universalis en dj Einfach. Galerie10 & Blue Episode, and its affiliated artists, organize the exhibition RE: AMSTERDAM. The festive opening at Saturday May 14th features Dj Homey Universalis and Dj Einfach. Sunday the 15th RE:AMSTERDAM will be closed in style with singer-songwriters Sir Ian, Hidde van Schie, Felix van Cleeff and The Yes Please. The exhibition will be curated by Dana Slijboom and Heddy- John Appeldoorn.

De fotoseries Red Roses Yellow Rain van Marrigje de Maar en Domestic Landscape Travelogs van Bert Teunissen zijn tot stand gekomen tijdens lange reizen. De Maar reisde vijf jaar door China en fotografeerde interieurs van verschillende minderheden. In de fotoserie van Teunissen staat het reizen zelf centraal.

The photo series Red Roses Yellow Rain by Marrigje de Maar and Domestic Landscapes Travelogs by Bert Teunissen came into being on their journeys around the world. De Maar travelled five times to China to photograph the interiors of various minority groups. In the series by Teunissen the focus lies with travel itself.

Tentoonstelling over kunstenaarsboeken, met het beroemde Xerox Book, zoals bedacht door Seth Siegelaub vanaf 1968. Een aantal catalogi, veel afkomstig uit Frankrijk, die zelf als expositie functioneren en niet slechts als illustratie van een expositie, en die een ontmoeting mogelijk maken tussen kunstenaar en publiek zonder tussenkomst van een museum of een galerie.

Exhibition over artistbooks, including the famous Xerox Book, according to the concept of Seth Siegelaub starting in 1968. Catalogues, a lot coming from France, which are the very objects of the exhibition and not only meant as an illustration of an exhibition. They form the meetingpoint between artist en public without museum or gallery.

De Hollandse Aquarellisten Kring is te gast in KunstENhuis en toont werk van Kris Spinhoven, Dick Casseé, Theo Linneman, Paul Husner, Toine Moerbeek, Rob Otte, Marjoke Staal en Suzanne van Reenen. Tevens verkoopexpositie. Organisatie: Rudolf Valster.

Afgelopen najaar richtten Japanse en Nederlandse ontwerpers en architecten in Tokio een tijdelijk Llove hotel in. Architect director: Jo Nagasaka, concept director: Suzanne Oxenaar.Ten tijde van de aardbeving bezochten zij Amsterdam. De installatie New Perspectives on Llove vormt een eerste reflectie op de ramp in Japan. Met werken van o.a. Yuko Nagayama en Ryuji Nakamura.

Last fall Japanese and Dutch designers and architects realised a temporary Llove hotel in Tokio. Architect director Jo Nagasaka, concept director Suzanne Oxenaar. At the time of the earthquake they visited Amsterdam. The installation New Perspectives on Llove is a first reflection on the disaster in Japan.

An exhibition of stories and objects that were conceived through an act of resistance.

NIMk presenteert met trots de eerste solo-tentoonstelling in Nederland van Omer Fast. De show omvat drie verschillende complexe installaties die allen nog niet eerder in Nederland zijn vertoond. In deze show komt Fast zijn fascinatie voor verhalende en filmische constructies, verschillende vormen van documentaire en re-enactment naar voren.

NIMk proudly presents the first solo exhibition by Omer Fast in The Netherlands. The show is comprised of three different complex installations, none of which have been seen in The Netherlands before. In the show Fast demonstrates his fascination with narrative and cinematic constructions, and different forms of documentary and re-enactment.

Nieuw Dakota presenteert May in A’dam, een speciale presentatie van internationale kunstenaars ter gelegenheid van Art Amsterdam, georganiseerd in samenwerking met Maison Descartes en Galerie Frank Elbaz, Parijs. De tentoonstelling is geinspireerd door de dynamiek van de stad en de locatie van Nieuw Dakota aan het IJ, en bevat het werk van Justine Kurland, Susan Collis, Ari Marcopoulos, Wallace Berman, Davide Balula, Meredyth Sparks, Gyan Panchal and Bernard Piffaretti.

Nieuw Dakota presents May in A’dam, a special presentation of international artists on the occasion of Art Amsterdam, organized in cooperation with Maison Descartes and Galerie Frank Elbaz, Paris. Inspired by the spirit of the city and Nieuw Dakota’s location on the IJ river, the exhibition features works by Justine Kurland, Susan Collis, Ari Marcopoulos, Wallace Berman, Davide Balula, Meredyth Sparks, Gyan Panchal and Bernard Piffaretti.

P/////AKT en Apice for artists zijn twee instellingen die een ruimte delen in Amsterdam Oost. Er zijn daarom twee tentoonstellingen te zien. Shuffle is een installatie van Herman van Ingelgem over de flexibele staat van objecten en ruimte. Tijl Orlando Frijns creëert met Waiting Room een begaanbare omgeving waarin zijn objecten gezamenlijk een verhaal vertellen.

P/////AKT and Apice for artists share a space in the East of Amsterdam. As a consequence there are two exhibitions to be visited. Shuffle is an installation on the flexible state of objects and space by Herman van Ingelgem. With Waiting Room Tijl Orlando Frijns creates an accessible environment in which his objects together tell a story.

Anselm Kiefer is door het Rijksmuseum gevraagd een nieuw kunstwerk te maken geïnspireerd op de Nachtwacht. Vanaf 7 mei is dit werk tijdelijk te zien voor publiek. Kiefer (1945) is één van de beroemdste Duitse kunstenaars van na de oorlog. Zijn veelal zeer grote kunstwerken bevinden zich in alle grote moderne kunstmusea ter wereld.

Anselm Kiefer has been commissioned by the Rijksmuseum to create a new work of art inspired by the Night Watch. From 7 May, this work will be on tempo¬rary display to the public. Kiefer (1945)
is one of Germany’s most significant post-war artists, and his (usually large) artworks are to be found around the world in all major modern art museums.

DesignSALON/ toont in onder andere het Amsterdam Museum, Museum van Loon, Museum Willet-Holthuysen, Droog en Magazijn de nieuwste ontwerpen van een select gezelschap designers een week na de SALONE DI MOBILE in Milaan.

Microphones is een installatie bestaande uit een rode loper, die leidt naar een groep microfoons, die het publiek lijken uit te nodigen om te spreken. In strijd met hun eigen functie versterken de microfoons echter geen geluid. Amalia Pica onderzoekt in haar werk de rol van de luisteraar als degene die de conver-satie mogelijk maakt.

Microphones is an installation consisting of a red carpet, leading to a group of microphones, which seem to be inviting the public to give a speech. Directly contradicting themselves, they will not amplify any sound. Amalia Pica’s work is an exploration of the role of the listener as the one who makes conversation possible.

Vervreemdende beelden, etnografische objecten, een gelukstest, een sociale interventie…het is te zien in de tentoonstelling Prix de Rome 2011 Beeldende Kunst. Na te zijn geselecteerd voor de meest prestigieuze Nederlandse kunstprijs, maakten Priscila Fernandes, Ben Pointeker, Pilvi Takala en Vincent Vulsma nieuw werk dat naast het werk van de zes andere longlistkunstenaars wordt geëxposeerd.

The disassociated image, ethnographic artefacts, a happiness test, a social intervention … on show in the Prix de Rome 2011 Visual Arts exhibition. After being selected for the most prestigious Dutch contemporary art award, Priscila Fernandes, Ben Pointeker, Pilvi Takala and Vincent Vulsma – put the fruit of their labours on show alongside works from the 6 other longlist artists.

The Stedelijk Museum continues its temporary program with a focus on its renowned collection of modern and contemporary art and design. Voor The Marx Lounge is SMBA omgebouwd tot een spectaculaire leeslounge met honderden publicaties op het gebied van Marxisme, kapitalisme, neoliberalisme, postkolonialisme, globalisering en cultuurtheorie. Leesgroepen, filmavonden en lezingen nodigen uit tot nadere studie van deze concentratie van kennis en haar relatie tot de kunst.

For The Marx Lounge the SMBA has been converted into a spectacular reading lounge with hundreds of publications in the field of Marxism, capitalism, neo-liberalism, post-colonialism, globalization and cultural theory. Reading groups, film screenings and lectures encourage to further study this assemblage of knowledge and its relation to art.

Aan de hand van voorwereldlijke dinosaurussen en draken portretteert Vera Louisa Aikens de mens als diersoort in een expositie die bestaat uit o.a. penseeltekeningen, 3 dimensionale werken en een hoorspel. Het beest plooit zich naar menselijke eigenschappen. Soms speels en verraderlijk maar ook geil en wreed. The beast can’t help it.

‘This Might Hurt’ Scenographer Vera Louisa Aikens explores the human nature related to prehistoric dinosaurs and dragons. Exposed in drawings, 3D objects and a soundscape, the beast discloses it’s human values. Sometimes playfull or treacherous aswell as sexual and cruel. The beast can’t help it.

TrouwAmsterdam en De Verdieping vieren de kunst in Amsterdam met drie avonden (en nachten) lang muziek, live performances en kunstinstallaties in het markante Trouw gebouw tijdens Art in Amsterdam. Deze voormalige drukkerij aan de Wibautstraat is tegenwoordig een ‘stad in een stad’ waar een restaurant, club en culturele projectruimte huizen. Tijdens de drie dagen verzorgen gerenommeerde kunstenaars en diverse culturele organisaties gezamenlijk de avondprogrammering.

TrouwAmsterdam and De Verdieping celebrate the arts in Amsterdam with a series of three nightly events with music, live performances and installation art in the remarkable Trouw building at the Wibautstraat. This former printing office of a national newspaper is now hosting a restaurant, club and cultural project space. These three nights renowned artists and cultural organizations team up for the occasion.

In 1900 gaat de nog onbekende 19-jarige Picasso naar Parijs, hét culturele centrum van de wereld. Picasso raakt geïnspireerd en experimenteert. In 1907 is hij uitgegroeid tot leider van de avant-garde.
In deze tentoonstelling is een groot aantal schilderijen bij elkaar te zien dat de vroege artistieke ontwikkeling van Picasso in de Franse hoofdstad toont.

In 1900, Picasso went as an unknown 19-year-old to Paris, the cultural centre of the world. Picasso gets inspired, he experiments and, by 1907, he has become the leading figure of the French avant-garde.
This unique exhibition brings together a significant group of paintings that reflect Picasso’s early artistic development in the French capital.

Het Virtueel Museum Zuidas (VMZ) realiseert kunst- en cultuurprojecten in het nieuwe stedenbouwkundig gebied van de Zuidas. VMZ is geen museum in traditionele zin, maar beschouwt het hele Zuidasgebied als een levendig en steeds veranderend museum. Projecten: Videoscherm CASZuidas, Lichtkunst in KPN-toren door Giny Vos, Oost-entree Zuidas door Krijn de Koning, Beeldenlijn, KunstKapel.

Virtual Museum Zuidas realizes projects on art and culture in the new financial district of Amsterdam. VMZ is not a traditional museum building, but sees the public space of the total area as a living and always changing exhibition space. Projects: Video screen CASZuidas, Light art in KPN-tower by Giny Vos, East entrance by Krijn de Koning, Sculpture Route, KunstKapel.

Tijdens de expositie Belgium (p)art stellen drie Belgische tentoonstellingsplekken zich voor. Ze staan voor een nieuwe generatie die in België aan het roer is. Ze tonen op geheel eigen wijze hun visie op tentoonstellingen maken anno 2011. Met: Base- Alpha Gallery, Actionfields en Outlandish. In The more crises, the more performance, op 12 mei, stelt PAE de performance als volwaardige kunstvorm centraal. Op 14 en 15 mei is er tevens de Amsterdam/Art Book Fair.

During the exhibition Belgium (p)art, three Belgian exhibition locations present themselves. They stand for Belgium’s latest generation of leading artists, introducing their vision on curating in the year 2011. With: Base-Alpha Gallery, Actionfields and Outlandish. In The more crises, the more performance, on May 12th, PAE is the first in the Netherlands to make an event only for performance art. Also, the first Amsterdam Art/Book Fair will take place the 14th and 15th of May at the Brakke Grond.

Van 1 tot 4 mei verblijven vier kunstenaars en vier politici dag en nacht in W139 om een grootschalig debat te voeren over hun onderlinge verbintenis. Doel is de huidige status quo tussen politiek en kunst te doorgronden en te doorbreken. In W139 vindt een tentoonstelling plaats van door de gesprekdeelnemers geagendeerde cases.

From 1 until 4 May, four artists and four politicians will spend day and night in W139, to participate in a fundamental debate concerning the deeply rooted connections between their practices. Their aim is to come to an understanding and break through the status quo that defines the current relationship between art and politics. The discussion will be accompanied by an exhibition in W139 of both artistic and political cases, selected by the participants.

World Press Photo organiseert ieder jaar de grootste en meest prestigieuze pers-fotografiewedstrijd ter wereld. De winnende foto’s worden verzameld in een reizende expositie die in meer dan honderd steden over de hele wereld is te zien. De foto’s van de Nederlandse winnaars Joost van den Broek, Chris Keulen en Martin Roemers zijn ook te zien.

World Press Photo organizes the world’s largest and most prestigious press photo-graphy contest each year. Prizewinning photographs are assembled into a traveling exhibition that is visited by over 2 million people in more than 100 cities worldwide. South African photographer Jodi Bieber won the World Press Photo of the Year 2010.

De wortels van Stichting ZET (1994) zijn nauw verbonden met tekenen als autonoom onderdeel van de hedendaagse beeldende kunst praktijk. De reden waarom wij in het kader van de manifestatie All About Drawing/Stedelijk Museum Schiedam in het Glazenhuis de ruimte geven aan ‘tekenaars’.
De tentoonstelling is mogelijke gemaakt met steun van Maison Descrates, Novotel en Stadsdeel Zuid.

The origins of the ZET Foundation (1994) are closely connected with drawing as an autonomous element in contemporary visual art practice. It is for this reason that the exhibition All About Drawing/ Stedelijk Museum Schiedam in Het Glazen Huis (The Glass House) is dedicated to the work of artists whose practice is lead by drawing. The exhibition has been made possible with the support of Maison Descrates, Novotel and the municipal authority of Amsterdam Stadsdeel Zuid.
